Vland Unveils Microbial Strain Industrial Application Center

On April 28, 2021, the unveiling ceremony of Vland's Microbial Strain Industrial Application Center & the launching ceremony of Microbial Resource Integrated Application Project were held in Qingdao Vland Innovation Park. The ceremonies were attended by experts and professors from China's research institutes and higher education institutions focusing on animal husbandry, aquaculture, plants, environment and food. Mr. Shi Yuelin, the representative from Qingdao Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, also attended and delivered a speech.

The Microbial Strain Industrial Application Center is established to serve as a cooperative platform for production, research and development as well as a bond linking microbial strain resources and information resources of different fields, with an ultimate aim to advance application cooperation on microbial strain resources and industrialize technological achievements.

With its strengths in microbial strain resources, technological innovation and industrialization, Vland boasts its industry-leading R&D capabilities in bio-manufacturing in China. The center will focus on the industries of animal husbandry, aquaculture, plants, environment and food to form a joint research model integrating production, research and development with market as the orientation, enterprises as the main body and products as the core.

After nearly 20 years of high-speed development, Vland's Microbial R&D Platform has now formed a technological innovation system including microbial strain collection, basic research, process research and applied research. Much work has been done for microbial resources development, microbial strain collection, functional strain development, product innovation and technology research. Rich experience has been accumulated in process research and large-scale fermentation production. Besides, the technology center owns fully automatic identification systems for microbial protein & DNA fingerprinting and a high-throughput strain screening workstation. It has also set up the M-H-R microbial screening and identification technology platform and the database of microbial strain functions with Vland characteristics. Until now, more than 50 functional indicators of thousands of production strain samples have been screened and evaluated. The established function evaluation system of animal and plant models has provided effective technical support for the development of functional microbial inoculants. The newly developed products and technologies have been widely used in industries of animal husbandry, plants, aquaculture, environmental protection and food, and thus help enhance the technological innovation capabilities of the biological industry.

In addition, Vland has two specialized production bases of microbial preparations, which have been certified by ISO-9001, FAMI-QS and FDA. As China’s national demonstration bases of microbes for an environmentally friendly agriculture, they have been committed to manufacturing Bacillus subtilis, Licheniformis subtilis, Lactic acid bacteria, Clostridium butyricum and functional composite microbial inoculants with world-class quality.

Taking advantage of its microbial strain resources and technological innovation, Vland has been endeavoring to screen microbial strains with outstanding specific functions and develop a series of precision microbial preparations. Products which apply to pollution-free farming models and waste treatment have been developed to meet the needs of feed plants for antibiotics alternatives and feed efficiency improvement. As effective solutions for eco-friendly farming, the products are designed for pigs, chickens, ruminants and aquaculture and meet the different needs from feed plants, veterinary drug factories, additive plants and farms.

A series of new composite microbial inoculants have been developed on four functions in planting including soil fertilization, crop protection, soil restoration and composting fermentation, and they have played an important role in the national initiative of zero fertilizer growth in this industry. These products have provided safe, green and organic biological solutions for crop cultivation and help ensure non-pollution and food safety.

With continuous development of modern biotechnology and China's attention to microbial strain resources, centering on China’s national and Qingdao municipal projects during the period of the 14th Five-Year Plan, Vland will further strengthen the development and utilization of microbial strain resources, focus on the innovative development of functional microbial strain resources and precision microbial preparations, and further industrialize functional strains.
