On April 21, 2021, the Second Session of the Third Council & the Second Session of the Third Standing Council of China Biotech Fermentation Industry Association (CBFIA) were held in Beijing. Mr. Gao Yanmin, Director of Consumer Products Division of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, Mr. Wang Yaping, Researcher of the Center for International Strategic Studies of the Counselor's Office of the State Council and President of Accounting Society for Foreign Economic Relations & Trade of China, and Mr. Geng Hongran, Deputy Director of the Industrial Biotechnology Division of China National Center for Biotechnology Development, attended the meeting. The meeting was moderated by CBFIA President Mr. Yu Xuejun and also attended by members of the Third Council and over 200 representatives.

During the meeting, the members and representatives discussed the topics including enterprise operation, existing problems and needs, the guidance on the high-quality industrial development in the years of 14th Five-Year Plan, the R&D of generic technology, standards establishment, policies and regulations, personnel training, etc.

CBFIA Honorary President Mr. Shi Weichen announced the decisions on honoring advanced collectives in biological fermentation industry for their achievements in response to COVID-19, in scientific and technological innovation in the 13th Five-Year Plan, and in the standardization work. Qingdao Vland Biotech Group Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of Vland Biotech Inc. was awarded all the three honorary titles.

Technological innovation has been the core driving force for Vland’s development. With the philosophy of self-innovation in mind, Vland has been making great efforts to improve its technologies for increased product quality, optimized product mix and reduced production costs. In 2020, Vland invested nearly 80 million yuan in research and development, accounting for 8.32% of its operating income, a ratio which is relatively high in the industry.

Vland has been focusing on the work of “from lab to market”, with the market as the orientation, development of new products and technologies as the goal and application development as the bond. Thanks to the support of 8 technical centers, 2 laboratories, 9 nation-level innovation platforms, R&D management model of "two chiefs + product manager” and the IPD project process management system, the application development and product promotion have been carried out in a number of areas.

Enzyme preparations are the "chip" in industrial biotechnology, and the expression system is the "lithography machine" for manufacturing the “chip”. That means the construction of expression systems is at the core of microbial production strain development and product industrialization. Through continuous huge R&D investment, Vland has built four high-efficiency protein expression systems including Trichoderma reesei, Pichia pastoris, Aspergillus niger and Bacillus, as well as their corresponding large-scale fermentation systems. It also set up an industry-leading high-throughput screening workstation and established the big data model of universal high-throughput gene screening and the system of protein engineering transformation. All this has greatly improved the catalytic efficiency and industrial application of enzymes and enhanced the technological innovation capabilities of the biological industry. While reinforcing its leading role in feed enzymes, Vland has expanded its enzyme business to the fields of industry, food, energy and biocatalysis. It stays committed to developing new products and has broken up international monopoly in a number of areas.

In 2020, Vland and one of its subsidiaries were named "Province-Level Key Laboratory" and "Shandong Provincial Technology Innovation Center for Animal Health Products ", respectively. The R&D project titled "Heat-resistant Transformation and Industrialization of Feed Phytase" won the Second Prize of Qingdao Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award. Moreover, it gained 20 new authorized Chinese invention patents, 1 US Patent and 2 PCT international applications. As of 2020, Vland and its subsidiaries own 252 authorized Chinese invention patents, 5 authorized US invention patents, 1 authorized European invention patents, and 16 PCT international applications.
